Michael Jordan to be presenter for Phil Knight's Hall of Fame induction

There was a bit of a ripple around the NBA when it was announced on Tuesday that Nike chairman Phil Knight would be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., in September. Knight was chosen as an inductee in the contributor category, and though there is no question that his company contributed greatly to the popularization of the sport in the U.S. and globally, Nike's financial ties to the NBA did raise some eyebrows.

But, certainly, Knight's presence in the Hall will be legitimized by his presenter, Michael Jordan, who will join former Georgetown coach John Thompson in introducing Knight. Presenters don't say much, but having the greatest player in the game's history, and one who both turned Nike into an iconic brand and was turned into an icon himself, will add some heft to Knight's induction.

Knight first popularized Nike as a running shoe brand in the 1960s and 70s, but it wasn't until the partnership with Jordan in the 80s and 90s, bolstered by some of the most successful ad campaigns in American business, that the company established itself as the dominant presence in basketball. SI writer calls out Michael Jordan for refusing to help high school coach Pop Herring

Michael Jordan is taken to task by Thomas Lake, a writer for Sports Illustrated, for not lending a hand to his mentally ill former high school basketball coach at Laney High in Wilmington, N.C., Clifton "Pop" Herring.

In an open letter to Jordan, Lake writes Jordan should show some compassion for Herring, a "sick and indigent man" living in "tumbledown old house," and one who was recently put in jail on questionable grounds. Also one who, according to Lake, opened the Laney High gym for Jordan at 6 a.m., "let (Jordan) borrow his car and had (him) over to his house and treated (him) like a son."

One well-known story about Jordan’s past is that he did not make his high school varsity squad when he was a sophomore. Jordan has always said he was cut from the team and called out Herring during his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2009. "I wanted to make sure you understood: You made a mistake, dude."

Writes Lake, "Well, it was your mistake. You used what should have been a joyful occasion to call out a man for something he did not actually do. A sick and indigent man at that. As we both know, Pop's life fell apart after you left town. Not his fault. A disease ran in his family, paranoid schizophrenia or some such thing, and he started acting strange, and he lost his job, and his wife, and his daughter, and pretty much everything else. Took to drinking, as you or I might do in similar circumstances."

Herring was arrested recently after a man staying at his house was charged with killing a woman and burying her in the yard. Lake confirmed with the D.A. that Herring had nothing to do with the crime and writes that Herring was incapable of keeping the alleged murderer — a serial rapist — out of his home. The man was taking advantage of him.

Because of Herring’s mental illness, Lake writes, he missed court dates and had a warrant issued for his arrest. He was put in jail, and Lake took $100 out of his own bank account to post Herring’s bond.

The last time Jordan saw Herring, according to Lake, was in 1994 at a celebration in Chicago, when Herring was booed after Jordan introduced him as "the first guy who ever cut me."

Lake writes, “Mike, I know you can’t fix Pop. But you can help him. He helped make you, and now you are a very rich man.”

Lake suggests that Jordan purchase Herring’s house, knock it down and build a new one; hire some caretakers and an exterminator; buy him some life essentials, like a clothes, dishwasher and a bedframe; and perhaps make a call to Nike and tell them his old coach needs a new pair of shoes.<hr>

Dad took me to my first Mariners game in 1986. I was 13 and the M's stunk. When we walked out through the concourse and I saw my first glimpse of the Kingdome field, I was hooked. People say the Kingdome was ugly, but at the time, I had never seen anything so beautiful.

The Mariners weren't on TV much and other than an occasional box score in the newspaper or the friendly voice of Dave Niehaus on the radio, there wasn't much reason to pay attention in Seattle. That all changed in 1989.

The Mariners had the next great player, a prodigy, the son of a major-league All-Star. They had "The Kid" and he was supposed to be great. Boy, was he ever.

For Mariner fans, it was love at first sight. The backward hat, the innocent smile, the most beautiful baseball swing I have ever seen. He hit home runs like it was easy. He played center field like he had been born to do nothing else, and when Edgar doubled down the line in '95, he raced around third and saved baseball in Seattle.

He became the most popular player in the sport, loved by thousands of fans all over the world. But as a kid growing up in the Northwest, he was more than that. He was ours. He was mine.

And last weekend I got to spend a day with him.

I'm almost 38 years old. I'm a father of 2 boys and well past the stage where anyone should have a sports hero. However when I walked out onto the golf course and saw him, shook his hand and introduced myself, I didn't feel 38. "Hello, I'm Ken" he said. I felt like I was 12 years old.

For the rest of the day I tagged along while he played golf. He could not have been any nicer. We hung out and joked around, talked about golf, baseball, his kids, my kids.

After golf we went and had lunch together. Talk about surreal. I have a poster of this guy up in my room at home and now we're having French fries together (for crying out loud, I even passed him the ketchup!) After lunch we ended up just sitting and talking for about two hours. He was gracious and engaging. Outgoing and humble. He posed for a photo and signed an autograph for me. In total we spent about six hours just hanging out. I'm sure for him it was just another afternoon, but for me it was six hours I will never forget.

"Thank you for playing the right way," I told him. "Thank you for never giving me a reason to regret telling my son's you are my favorite player. Thank you for coming back to Seattle so that I could sit in the stands with them and watch you hit one out."

Maybe so. But for me and so many other Northwest baseball fans, he was a lot more. We watched him play, collected his baseball cards, wore his jersey and hoped he was as great a person as we built him up to be.

Some will laugh at him. Some will frown and declare that he's making a mockery of his stellar career by staying way too long. Griffey will shrug and just have fun.

It's what he knows. It's all he knows. The son of a baseball lifer, he's been in a clubhouse basically since diapers. His father played until age 41, and now Junior will be a major-leaguer at 40. It's not exactly a glamorous 40/40 club, but the Griffeys sure do love their baseball.

The 2010 season will be the 38th consecutive year that either Ken Sr. or Jr. has been on a major-league roster. The last time we were Griffey-less was 1972. If baseball were played with an orange, they would've squeezed almost every drop of vitamin C out of that sucker.

But Junior thinks he has a little juice left.

More than that, however, he needs the game more than he needs his reputation. Think about what he's doing. By returning to the Mariners with an understanding that there are no promises about his role, Griffey is willing to be Ryan Langerhans, basically.

After all that he's done — hitting 630 home runs, winning 10 Gold Gloves, dominating his era of baseball — he cares so much about just being on a team, just being a big-leaguer, that he'll put more strain on his balky left knee simply for the camaraderie.

He'll likely ride the pine so that a to-be-determined player who wouldn't have been able to hold Griffey's Nike cleats during his prime can give his team — his team — a better chance to win.

It's one of the most unlikely stories in sports. Superstars just don't do this. They quit well before it gets to this point. They love their reputation more than they love the game.

Griffey hasn't had a Griffey-like season since he hit 30 homers and drove in 93 runs in 2007. The past two seasons, he has experienced the rapid decline that occurs when great players are done. Still, he wants to play.

He's not chasing a championship, either. The Mariners finished 85-77 last season, but they're a long way from beating the Yankees or Phillies.

What's he playing for? He's playing to play. He's playing to use his baseball knowledge and leadership to help the Mariners expedite their rebuilding. Some would argue that he's stunting their growth by taking a roster spot and stealing at-bats from the younger players, but until the Mariners clearly have a better option, that's a moot point. Griffey might have hit only .214 in 117 games last season, but he did more good than harm.

"I think all of us realize what Ken meant to the ballclub last year, his contributions on and off the field, in the clubhouse, his leadership," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said while announcing Junior's new one-year contract. "It was pretty special. He's excited about being back."

The deal came together quickly. Zduriencik chose his words carefully when he called the signing "part of the puzzle." Let me translate. That's Zduriencik for, "Hey, don't think we're content to force Griffey into the lineup even if he isn't producing. We have bigger plans, but since this is a huge public deal, it was best to get it out of the way."

It shouldn't be a problem that the Mariners sealed this deal so soon. They haven't backed themselves into a corner. They can still look for a better designated hitter. Now they get to move on knowing that they've got a Hall of Fame fallback option in place.

In addition, they showed Griffey the proper respect by not leaving him hanging.

"Peace of mind is something he has," Zduriencik said. "At the end of the year, he said, 'It's your decision. If you want me back, I want to come back.' That was a driving force — we wanted him back. It's not a guessing game. He knows where he's going to be. That's a real positive about having it done so soon."

Selfishly, there's a part of all of us who want to see him end his career in the most glorious manner possible. It's hard to watch an idol get old and lose his skills. But that's when you learn the most about them.

The best Griffey memories are frozen. You will never forget them. And 10 years from now, when he's 50 and retired and immortalized in Cooperstown, you'll barely remember that he stayed way too long. His greatness is too entrenched.
